Position Description – Enrolled Nurse
Purpose:
- Provides safe and quality consumer-centered care that supports consumers to live the best life they can.
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Enrolled Nurse with current AHPRA registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia including a Board approved qualification in medication administration.
Responsible to: The Clinical Manager and Facility Manager.
Main Responsibilities:
- To have knowledge of and provide services in line with the Aged Care Quality standards.
- To follow and act in accordance with the Aged Care Code of Conduct.
- Practice under the direct of indirect supervision of a Registered Nurse and within the scope of practice for an Enrolled Nurse, individual training, qualification, and competence.
- Coaches and provides tool-box training for personal carers to complete allocated care on a shift-by-shift basis.
- Contributes to the efficient utilization of resources for safe and quality care.
- Consistently delivers safe, quality consumer-centered care that supports consumers’ health, safety and well-being and is inclusive of their identity, culture and diversity.
- Engages with and fosters partnerships with consumer and or their representative/s when delivering care.
- Administers medication safely according to Registered Nurse delegation, legislative requirements and the organisations policies and procedures.
- Supervisor PCAs administering medications as delegated and liaises with the supervisory nurse as required.
- Implements and monitors consumer Risk Management Plans to support consumers to take risks to enable them to live the best life they can.
- Promotes an evidence-based process for defining infections and the re-enforcement of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program for the safe and appropriate prescribing and use of antimicrobials.
- Appropriate and timely follow up of exceptions to consumer care plans in partnership with the consumers and or their representative. This includes timely and appropriate communication with the supervisory registered nurse.
- Consumer deterioration is recognized and timely and appropriate responsive action is taken, including communication with supervisory registered nurse when a consumers health status rapidly declines.
- Monitors the areas of key clinical risk and ensures timely escalation to the supervisory registered nurse occurs where safety is compromised, to ensure appropriate response actions can be taken.
- Ensures timely and appropriate action in response to incidents, comments and complaints and that transparent and open communication occurs with consumers when things go wrong. This includes timely and appropriate communication with the supervisory registered nurse.
Performance appraisal: at 3 months, 6 months, then annually and as requested by employer/employee.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Maintains own knowledge and skills for safe care/services by completing annual mandatory training and competence assessments related to your role, participating in ongoing education sessions and tool-box training and reading notice boards, newsletters and memos.
- Annual training objectives are completed following performance appraisal to ensure you have the right skills and knowledge to perform your role.
- Participates in relevant professional and network groups (recommendation only).
Medication Administration.
- Safely administers medications as delegated by a RN according to individual qualification, legislative requirements, competence and the organisations policies and procedures.
- Monitors consumers vital signs and related observations and reports any changes in health status to the supervisory RN.
- Administers PRN medication according to the delegation of the supervisory RN. Seeks clarification from the supervisory RN for medication related issues such as; medication chart difficult to read.
- Supervision of personal carers administering medication according to legislative requirements, the organisations policies and procedures and liaison with the supervisory nurse.
